Code of Ethics and Guidelines

The Psychologist adheres to the code of ethics and guidelines set up by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC; Registered Practitioner Psychologist number PYL34507), and the British Psychological Society (BPS). The Psychologist is additionally registered and adheres to Data Protection guidelines.

Confidentiality

Information and details of sessions may be shared in the context of clinical supervision without any identifying information. However, there are situations where confidentiality may have to be broken including any injuries or harm that may occur to you or another; any risk involving the case of child abuse; and any information about an act of terrorism that has been disclosed. If circumstances allow, the Psychologist will endeavour to always inform and discuss the issue of confidentiality with the client first if confidentiality is going to be broken.

Sharing Information

Generic professional practice guidelines published by the British Psychological Society (BPS) specify that the best practice for psychologists is to share limited and an agreed amount of information with other health professionals e.g. a client’s General Practitioner (GP). This aims to promote the safety and protection of the client and the public, in order to carry out the duty of care for the benefits of clients, this is one of the reasons why GP details are requested at the beginning of therapy. If you wish the Psychologist to contact your GP please request this otherwise the Psychologist will assume the client does not wish the Psychologist to share information with them.

Confidentiality will be honoured except in circumstances where the client discloses information about harming themself or others, and in situations where perceived risks are involved. In such circumstances the Psychologist will need to communicate with the clients GP or other relevant sectors.  Furthermore, if in any case, the client wishes the Psychologist to share their information with other health professionals, please state this and the Psychologist will ask the client to sign an agreement for the Psychologists disclosure of the clients information to others.

The psychologist may liase with other services if given permission explicitly by the client to do so.

When supporting young people the psychologist and client family will discuss ways to share information to promote joined up working, however the clients confidentiality will be respected and maintained. Parents are welcome to share information within the session time. If the parents wish to discuss things further an additional session, to be invoiced, may be agreed to allow sufficient time for this.

Length and Location of Sessions

Each individual and couple therapy session lasts for 50 minutes. The frequency and the number of sessions will be discussed and agreed with the client during an initial consultation.

Appointment locations will be agreed at the start of sessions. Online sessions will be held over zoom. An appointment invitation will be sent out on the day of the appointment.

Bookings

Appointments will be made via correspondence with the Psychologist.

Lateness

Extensions cannot be added to the end of the session due to other client appointments. If the client is late for the session no full or part refund will be provided. If the client does not attend the session in the first 15 minutes following the agreed start time, the session will be terminated with no full or part refund provided.

Cancellation of sessions

In the case of cancellation and alteration of sessions, 48 hours’ notice before the date and time of the clients session is required at all times, otherwise the full session will still be charged. If the client wishes to cancel a session due to unforeseen circumstances, circumstances out of their immediate control or an emergency, the 48 hour cancellation policy will still apply.

Any session (insured/uninsured/private) which is cancelled or rescheduled by the patient with less than 48 hours notice, will be charged in full to the client unless the cancelled or rescheduled session is taken up by another client.

Cancellations can be accomplished by sending an email or text message to the Psychologist.

Couple/Pair/Group sessions

Following the initial telephone consultation session each client will be offered an individual assessment session. Once therapy begins, each session will only begin once all clients are present.

Trainees Information

The Psychologist is available to work with psychology, psychotherapy or counselling trainees/students in different capacities – as a clinical supervisor, an academic consultant/a research supervisor for MSc and Doctorate Trainees, and a personal therapist.  Trainees receive a reduced rate to the Psychologists professional service.

Insurers

It is the client’s responsibility to ensure that the insurer they are using provide payment for their sessions in a timely manner. If an insurance provider is changed by the client whilst still attending sessions with the Psychologist the client will be responsible for payment of the sessions should the Psychologist not be registered with the new insurer. It is the clients responsibility to ensure that the Psychologist is registered with their insurance provider prior to commencement of any sessions. If the Psychologist is not registered with the insurer or cannot obtain payment from the insurer for any reason, or if there is a shortfall in the payment made by the insurer the client is liable for payments of any sessions already completed.

If sessions are being funded by an insurer the client is liable to pay for any missed, late or cancelled sessions as these are not covered by the policy.

The client holds primary responsibility for ensuring the funding of sessions is in place, the psychologist is willing to keep track of session numbers to support the client in this.

Brief extension reports will be covered within session fees however if a more detailed report is required for any reason, including extension requests, this will be invoiced (see fees for additional services section).
